| Nerdy Girl |
| Gord Sran interviewing Cecil
from Nerdy Girl. Gord: So Cecil, where are you originally from? Cecil: Im originally from Montreal. Gord: Where did the band originate from? Cecil: Actually, its my project and Ive worked with lots of different people. I started out in Montreal working with a guy named Gordon Hashimoto, it was a very minimalist thing, with just guitar and vocals, then got a band together and recorded a record called twister thats on a Canadian label, and No Life records in the states. Then I went on tour with a different band, then I moved to LA. This band is all from Seattle, so I went up to Seattle and practiced with them. This is our first show, actually, tonight. Gord: So how did you hook up with the band in Seattle? Cecil: Well Julie, the guitar player and I used to be in this all girl band, in Montreal called Bite. Well she was in Seattle and I was in L.A. and I wanted to go on tour, so I called her up and asked her if she wanted to go on tour, and she said, "hey, lets go!" So, her and an old band-mate of her practiced my songs off my C.D. and then I went up there and practiced and got my new songs going. Gord: So this is the first date of your tour? Cecil: Ya, this is the first date of our tour, and the first show weve done together as this band. Gord: And the tour is taking you where? Cecil: Well, were going across Canada, just Canada right now. Gord: When youre writing , to you try to conform with the current style and sound? Cecil: I write by myself, I just try to write good songs and then play them. I dont have any kind of agenda where I think it will fit in. Its just me, and my stuff, and whatever, some people like it and some people hate it. Im just a lucky girl cause I get to play it, and some people get to hear it. Gord: So tell me more about Nerdy girl, whats going on? Cecil: Well, our Van got broken into last night, which sucked. Gord: Have you toured with anyone, in the past? Cecil: Ive played with a lot of people, Mary Lou Lord, The Drifters, Scrawl. Gord: What are your views on the recent buzz on successful female vocalists? Cecil: Well, heres something interesting, I put out a ten inch single just called Nerdy Girl, it debuted on college radio at the same time as Alanis Morrisettes record, and Alanis Morrisette debuted at number 121 and we debuted at number 97, so I beat her for one week., I have the honor of being the only other person to debut higher than her. Gord: How do you feel about the status of your own music? Cecil: Theres always going to be good stuff and crappy stuff, I dont know if Im crappy or Im good but I know I like what Im doing. I like writing songs, and when Im done with music, Im done., Gord: Good luck, Cecil. |
